Subject:

Satellite remote sensing imagery represents an attractive data source to monitor large regions with frequent updates. In this context, the operational production of accurate land cover maps plays an important role in global-scale environmental assessments and becomes crucial for a wide range of research domains. New earth observation missions such as Sentinel provide images with high spatial and temporal resolution. Accordingly, new image classification methods for the generation of reliable land cover maps are needed.

Context:

Bell Labs has helped weave the technological fabric of modern society. Since its founding in 1925, technology from Bell Labs has shaped the ways people live, work and play. Over the past 80 years, the Bell Labs R&D community has made seminal scientific discoveries, created powerful new technologies, and built the world's most advanced and reliable networks.

Project:
In 2010 the theoretical capacity limit of a single-mode fiber was found. The forecasted demand of data traffic will exhaust the capacity of the installed fiber plant by 2020. New fiber-optic designs are required in order to guarantee an efficient and sustainable increase in terms of cost and energy consumption for the following 30 years. Spatial division multiplexing in its two flavors, multi-mode and multi-core fibers, has become the new research paradigm. The scope of the project is to investigate on advanced transmission and detection techniques to exploit the capacity of the new optical fiber.

On detection of aerial vehicles

Codi DK AU-Nokia Aalborg_1-A_18

Tipus d'estada TFM
Descripció

Context:

In recent years, an impressive growth on UAVs’ (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), also referred to as drones, market has been observed. This increase and the steady technological development of these devices are expected to enable a large number of new applications. It represents a market opportunity for cellular operators: UAVs will require data link connections, either for telemetry, command and control exchanges and potentially for realtime applications. In the first example, the data link must be highly reliable due to safety concerns, in the latter it can demand high capacity, e.g. for real-time footage streaming.

Project:
Cellular networks have been optimized for users on the ground, leading to antennas being downtilted and optimised power control and mobility settings for ground usage. Aerial vehicles connected over cellular networks see the network differently. Even though downtilted antennas are used, coverage up to 120 m is typically better than on the ground, leading to a better reception of the desired signal, but also to better reception of the interfering signals. An aerial vehicle typically sees many more (interfering) cells than a user on the ground, further increasing the interference, but also impacting mobility performance.

All this leads quite easily to the conclusion to the optimal settings for ground users are not necessarily the optimal settings for aerial vehicles. In order to differentiate we however need to know when a UE is airborne and when a UE is on the ground. This differentiation is the topic of this study and will include:

- Design of detection and classification algorithms based on standard radio measurements, like RSRP, RSRQ to detect airborne users

- Considerations and impact of different environments (urban, rural), frequencies and setups on the
classification algorithms

- Test of algorithm against measurement and simulation data which is available. Potentially testing real-life on drones

- Design of architectural impacts of measurement exchange required and design of optimal detection scheme for 5G

Descripció

Context:

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is Germany´s national research center for aeronautics and space and Germany´s space agency. Its extensive research and development work in Aeronautics, Space, Transportation and Energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. Approximately 5,500 people are employed in DLR´s 28 institutes and facilities at eight locations in Germany.

Given the increasing interest towards convergence of 5G and satellite in suitable use-cases, i.e., for under/unserved areas or high mobile systems, the problam of expedited and reliable content delivery is of utmost importance. The challenge is in the different characteristics of the two media and the mobility of the networks (users) that can make the network point of access obsolete or the content available in caches no more updated, available or even requested.

Tasks:

The main activity will consist in surveying the activities done so far in the context of MEC for satellite networks as well as overall caching solutions for terrestrial network. Then a suitable caching strategy based on ICN architectures and the related naming appriach will have to be designed and validated through simulations.

Design and Analysis of Advanced Medium Access for Machine-to-Machine Applications

Tasks:

With the increasing interest in machine-type of communications for the future 5G network, new challenges will arise. The sporadic transmissions of small packets from a large population that is intermittently active, is a new paradigm that requires the design of novel communication techniques. Standard solutions for the sharing of the medium are human-centric and do not necessarily provide the required flexibility and efficiency for this new kind of data traffic.
In this context, random access protocols arise as promising solutions for this specific traffic type. In the recent past, the classic schemes as ALOHA and Slotted ALOHA has been replaced by advanced protocols relying on advanced signal processing techniques as successive interference cancellation.
The design of such medium access protocols heavily relies on the underlying physical layer. Typical abstractions, as the collision channel model, are not anymore sufficient to capture the behavior and the benefits of these new random access schemes.
In this context, the thesis has the aim to analyse the performance of novel advanced random access protocols with realistic and detailed physical layer. The candidate shall implement, in C or C++, a full medium access layer and physical layer including all relevant effects.

Approximately 5,500 people are employed in DLR´s 28 institutes and facilities at eight locations in Germany.

Given the increasing interest towards convergence of 5G and satellite in suitable use-cases, i.e., for under/unserved areas or high mobile systems, the problam of resource allocation assumes particular importance. The challenge is in the different characteristics of the two media and the network slining approach applied to provide different virtual channels to application with different guarantee of QoS.

Tasks:

The main activity will consist in surveying the activities done so far in the context of NFV and network slicing for satellite networks as well as overall network orchestration. Then a suitable resource management approach will have to be designed and validated through simulations.

The top research institution in Germany. MPI research is at the highest level and results are published at top conferences and journals. In our field the group regularly publishes at CVPR, SIGGRAPH, ICCV, Eurographics and PAMI, IJCV. MPI-Saarbrücken is widely recognized internationally as one of the worlds best institutions in computer vision and computer graphics

Subject:

Computer Vision, Computer Graphics and Machine Learning

Project Description:
Analyzing and modeling people from all sorts of sensor data: IMUs, 3D/4D scans, RGBD, images or video. Current computer vision algorithms can detect people in images or estimate 2D pose to a remarkable accuracy. However, people are much more complex. Humans perceive lots of information from other humans; for example we sense other people's emotional state based on facial expressions and body movements, or we make guesses about people's preferences based on what clothing they wear. In order for machines to interact with humans they have to both perceive all this information from sensory data and they have to "appear" human to us. Research topics revolve around perceiving and building digital generative models of people from real people.

In particular research topics are:

· Analyzing people in images

· Human body shape, clothing and motion modeling using deep learning
· Deep learning
· Generative models of people
· Human motion capture and performance capture (3D/4D reconstruction)

· Mesh registration
